
Activities of Gian Jyoti Saksharta Samiti, Kurukshetra
Spread over 1608 sq. km. the district has 419 villages under two Sub-Division and five block. The literacy rate of the district is 58.8%.
The Project proposals of TLC in the District Kurukshetra were approved by NLMA on dated 26.06.1994. and Rs. 64.00 Lacs were sanctioned 1.00 Lacs learners in the age group of 15-35 years in the district.
Workshop for preparation of Kala Jathas was organised at Kurukshetra about 50 volunteers had participated. Four Kala Jathas including one exclusive womens Jatha were prepared for environment building.
In order to mobilize the masses, Saksharta Samelans were organised at each blocks. All the Panches/Sarpanches, representatives of voluntary oraganisation.
One day orientation workshop for the functionaries cluster co-ordinators etc. was organised at Kurukshetra in which the experts from the other TLC district have been able to remove the doubts and misgivings of the participants.
Training for the volunteers were organised thorough the Master Trainers at village. Batching and Matching of learners and voluntary was started after updating of the survey in the village.
On the occasion of Kurukshetra Sanskritik Mela Literacy awareness Camp was organised. Posters, Stickers and badges were provided to the volunteers.
Village level evaluation committees are formed in the whole district and the Samelan of elected representatives were organised. Competition of local folk artists was organised to prepare the Kala Jathas. These artists have participated in National level Literacy Samelan at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi.
But due to weakness in the field of training, environment building, survey & monitoring, non-participation of NGOs the project could not continue the pace of work. Harvesting & sowing of crops were the reason, which had been the obstacle in the path of Literacy Campaign.
During the review of the functioning of the project some weakness were seen and it was decided to present the Literacy in the form of willing in day to day active life of the masses and link it with the interests of the various interest group and the on going developmental program, accordingly Operation Restoration Project was prepared and submitted to NLMA which tried to link the Youth, Peasants and women under the banner of various voluntary oranisational named as Yuva Shakti, Nai Disha & Jago Bahina respectively.
Yuva Shakti:
For mobilizing the youth for ensuring their participation in sports and self-employment activities and developmental activities, Yuva Shakti groups were constituted. Total 20 groups are working in the district at present
Nai Disha:
Has been working regarding diversification in agriculture i.e. by changing crop rotation to minimize diseases, pests and to improve water management and fetch maximum profitability be growing vegetables, fruits and flowers. By No. 98, Total 58 Nai Disha has been functioning.
Jago Bahina:
In order to mobilize the women for creating the awareness about gender equality, women empowerment and about the other schemes, Jago Bahina groups were constituted in the district. At present 85 groups are working for self-earning. These groups are also working as production units making Broom, Hand Fan, Potato Chips, Undergarments in the village Simbalwal, Pipli, Dudla in district, Kurukshetra. Some Jago Bahina groups have also started Mushroom (Khumbi) production in village Nakhrojpur.
There are four Kala Jathas in district Kurukshetra, which are active in the district to improve the Environment Building. During the Operation Restoration Project four Kala Jathas have covered 200 villages of various blocks of the district.
Kurukshetra organised a certificate distribution function in village Bachgaon in which certificate were issued to neo-literate.
The Deputy Commissioner-cum-President Smt. Jyoti Arora, Gian Jyoti has played vital role in implementation of the Campaign in the District.
