The Economy of Kurukshetra district is agro based. Kurukshetra district is a prosperous area from the point of view of production of wheat and paddy.
The District Food and Civil Supplies Department is coordinating lifting of food grains as per government policy. For this purpose there is good arrangement for marketing of agriculture produce of farmers as there are total 25 Mandies in the district, out of which 9 are regular and 11 seasonal.
PROCUREMENT:
In the year 2000-2001, 520849 M.T. Paddy has arrived in the Mandies, out of which Government agencies have purchased 297530 M.T on support Price in Kurukshetra district. Govt. Agencies have delivered 27240 M.T. to FCI and 41918 M.T. Levy rice have been delivered by Rice Millers of the district. In addition, 475779 M.T. Wheat has arrived in various Mandies of Kurukshetra district, out of which 444177 M.T. Wheat has been purchased by Government Agencies on support price scheme in the year 2000-2001
.
PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
Food and Supplies Deptt. has been performing the job of Public Distribution System under which the Sugar, Kerosene Oil and Wheat Atta is being provided to the people of below poverty line in the district on their ration cards through Fair Price Shops approved by the Food and Civil Supplies Department. There are 74 Fair Price Shops in Urban and 271 Fair Price Shops in Rural areas in Kurukshetra district in operation and the distribution work of Essential Commodities and other Commodities related to P.D.S. is being done in public interest on priority. The facility of LPG (Cooking Gas) has also been ensured to the consumers of Kurukshetra district by this department.
